As fertility clinics have closed and treatments have halted amid COVID-19, our fertility expert and Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, Dr. Kate Phillippi, DACM, shares some positive thoughts on ways fertility can be naturally improved.

If your family plans have been put on hold, the best thing to do is not to stress. Navigating fertility planning is already stressful enough!

There are a few things you can focus on to improve your chances from conception while we are all stuck at home:

Good Nutrition – It is best to avoid caffeine and alcohol, reduce the consumption of processed foods, and increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. It is also very important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water!

Exercise Often – It is important to maintain a healthy body weight while you plan for conception. While rigorous or intense exercise is not recommend for those trying to conceive, there are plenty of other options. Some good examples include walking outside, or a gentle yoga flow.

Sleep Schedule – Be sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. To help get a better rest, try limiting your screen time, and shutting off all electronics about an hour before bed.

Managing Stress – Focus on good self care. You can try one of our favorite breathing techniques here. Some of our favorite apps for practicing mindfulness include: Calm, Headspace, and Circle in Bloom.

Supplements and Chinese Herbs – This can be very helpful and effective but it is important to consult with a professional first to determine specifically what your body needs. All of these recommendations can help balance your hormones, allow your body to relax, and function optimally. These practices can also help manage some menstrual conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, or painful periods.
