About Dr. Bunker-Huertas

Dr. Miguel Bunker-Huertas received his Doctorate of Chiropractic degree from National University of Health Sciences, in Lombard, Illinois, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida. Go Gators!

Dr. Bunker-Huertas practiced massage therapy for 10 years before earning his Chiropractic degree, and worked with triathletes, runners, yogis, volleyball players and weight lifters. He specialized in orthopedic and sports massage, as well as prenatal massage and neuromuscular therapy. As a chiropractor, Dr. Bunker-Huertas builds on his experience with manual therapy by incorporating rehabilitation through the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment®. He specializes in restoring functional movement, treating joint dysfunction, and reducing muscular tension. He strives to create a sense of well-being through hands-on approaches and through restorative movement.

Dr. Bunker-Huertas enjoys working with athletes, children and parents, as well as soon-to-be parents. In his free time, he enjoys cooking and dancing with his wife and two boys, as well as weight training, practicing yoga, and traveling to his hometown in Puerto Rico.

Q&A with Dr. Bunker-Huertas

What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
I’m most passionate about exploring movement and removing the barriers we have to moving, whether in the clinic, at the gym or in life. Personally, I’m most excited about growth and learning.

What three traits define you?
Passionate, Curious, Adventurous

What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?
Teach. I love passing on what I have learned and helping others gain some insight into their own journey. I’ve taught languages, bodywork, and yoga, and it brings me joy to teach patients about how their body works.

What are you surprisingly good at?
Splitting an apple with my bare hands.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
My family is everything to me, and there’s nothing like sharing the joy of watching your kids grow up. I’m amazed by how much and how fast they learn, and they definitely keep me on my toes! Dancing, traveling and yoga tie for second place.

What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?
When patients refer their mother or children to see me after I’ve treated them. I take that as a deep level of trust amongst my patients and myself.

How long have you been working in your field?
I’ve been in the bodyworks and bodyways business since 2006!

What’s your biggest accomplishment?
While graduating from chiropractic school has been my most recent achievement, my biggest accomplishment was going from being a timid, shy high schooler to winning 1st place at a regional public speaking competition my senior year.

How does your education connect to your professional career? What about personal experiences?
I’ve been an educator since high school when I would tutor math. Later on, I would teach languages, yoga, dancing, bodywork, and eventually, I would end up educating my clients about their bodies and about different ways to treat their conditions. While in chiropractic school, I learned that “Doctor” comes from the Latin verb docere, which means “to teach”. I believe my whole life has led me to teach my patients about their bodies and how to move.

What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
I’ve had great outcomes treating pain that comes from bad posture, especially from sitting at a desk all day or sitting a lot in general. Once we figure out it’s safe to move, I help my patients remove the fear of moving even in the presence of pain.

What are you complimented on most in your work?
I’ve been complimented on the smile I bring to my work. I love what I do.

Who is your ideal client and why should they connect with you?
My doors are open to everyone, and I’ll do my best to figure out how I can help you through your journey. That said, I like to tell patients that the more they participate in their healing journey, the better the outcome.

What is your grand, audacious goal? What do you wish people would know, believe, do?
My grand, audacious goal is to help others know that movement is life. We can crawl, walk, run, shake and dance through almost anything, even pain.

Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?
Besides my love for traditional yoga and dancing, I love practicing AcroYoga and flying people in the air! It’s fun and it teaching us to be playful again. Also, I’d love to run a marathon. My wife has run several, and that has always been an inspiration to me.

What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I love spending time with my family, cooking, going for walks or bike rides, and playing outside with them. In my spare time, I like to read, do yoga, dance or go to the gym. Being relatively new to the Chicago area, I love going out to try new places to eat!
