John Ryan (J.R.) De Leon is a Rehabilitation Specialist at Aligned Modern Health in Andersonville. J.R. graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science. During his undergraduate career, J.R. was able to have an internship at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital as an Exercise Physiologist, working closely with cardiac rehab patients, the geriatric population, and the bariatric population. In his senior year of college, J.R. also volunteered at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, getting exposed to more patient clientele, getting to know them and assuring comfort as he guides them to their destination in the hospital.
J.R. has always been interested in the healthcare field and has always hoped to become a physician, more specifically in sports medicine. J.R. is working on getting his personal training certification through PTA Global. He plans on using his education from the Rehabilitation Specialist position and personal training to be more mindful of movement and creativity. J.R. believes that exercise and movement play a very important role in a patient’s health, wellness, and happiness. Lastly, J.R. will stop to pet every dog he encounters. What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
Professionally, I am very passionate about the healthcare field and the breakthroughs in medicine in general. Personally, I am very passionate about living an active lifestyle, especially in exercise.
What three traits define you?
Hard worker, Creative, Curious
What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?
Bake. It is my stress reliever and personal escape.
What are you surprisingly good at?
Picking up sports. Not necessarily the best when playing them, but I can get to the basics. And if I do it more often, can develop more than just the basic movements.
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
Chocolate. If there’s one bad thing I get to eat everyday, it would be chocolate.
What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?
When patients come back to their next appointment excited to work with me again.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Getting a Bachelor’s degree.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
Teaching Dance Fitness classes to kids of various ages. It was more of a test of my patience than weird. Needless to say, I still love being around kids!
How does your education connect to your professional career? What about personal experiences?
I studied Exercise Science at Loyola, so learning a lot about the human body and corrective exercise is fundamental as a rehab specialist. I’ve also worked with patients in the past and have established a sense of comfort in working in the field.
What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
I wouldn’t say problems, but I try to have at least one moment when working with a patient to make them smile. A smile can go a long way.
Who is your ideal client and why should they connect with you?
My ideal client is someone who is an active gym goer, an athlete, or an exercise fanatic.
In your work or creative process, what concepts are sacred? Which rules have you made, which ones do you follow?
Making mistakes is a big part of learning and growing.
What is your grand, audacious goal? What do you wish people would know, believe, do?
My ultimate goal in life is to be a Sports Physician working alongside athletes, whether it be in orthopedics or as a general practitioner.
Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?
A personal goal of mine is to become a sports physician and work with well known athletes and dancers.
Some of my passions include: working out, dancing, singing, bike riding, petting dogs.
What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I like to go try different restaurants and live an active lifestyle.
Share something unique that most people don’t know about you.
I am fluent in English and Tagalog, the native language of the Philippines.. I understand Spanish more than I can speak it. I can read some Latin. I understand two Filipino dialects other than the main language.
