The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time is NOW.

The holidays are fast approaching and you have lingering goals for your weight. Whether your goals are to maintain, lose, or gain, the following steps are essential to support a strong and lasting foundation for reaching and maintaining your goals. We all know the statistics of resolutions – most people don’t keep them. Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can start today, the perfect time is now.

First, let’s address weight. Weight is a byproduct of improving overall lifestyle. The focus on weight as a number is becoming less and less popular, which is great! Though the numbers have a place it is not the end all be all determining factor. Healthy weight is associated with a longer life, one of better quality and fewer medical bills! Healthy weight is important for cardiovascular function, healthy hormones and sex life, mood, blood sugar, cholesterol, digestion, pain resolution, and more.

Holistic and functional medicine looks at the root cause. Are those 3 cookies last night what did you in? No. Are those 3 cookies at night the last week, month, or year what did you in? Yes, but the habits and reason behind it is the greater driver. So here comes the first step.

Identify your road block(s)

Yep. Dig deep. Do some soul searching to figure out what, up to this point has held you back from making lasting changes. With that, identify your why for overcoming it and share it with someone. When you identify and acknowledge what this is for you, you will be more equipped to beat those resolution statistics.

What’s the next step in the recipe for success? Support

Get a partner, ask a friend, hire a coach, or see your Functional Medicine provider and Registered Dietitian. Work with someone who has overcome challenges and continues to be motivated to be their best self, more than just an accountability partner. Get your support team together. Do you need a little help or a lot of help? Ask a friend, hire a coach, or schedule with your FM doc and registered dietitian. Set yourself up for success.

Lastly, have a plan of action.

It won’t be perfect and don’t wait until you ‘feel’ ready. A solid plan will have a start and a finish, measurable check points along the way, and daily action steps. Decide on your plan of action, and ready or not, commit, recommit, and recommit again! Is your goal small or big? This will help determine what kind of plan you need and how much help you need with it. Track along the way. A tool such as the Best Self Journal can help do some of the work for you.

We could have given you tips such as drink more water, get 8 hours sleep, meal prep, eat adequate protein throughout the day, etc. What we want for you is lasting change for a better life, not just for the next few weeks or months. You are the ultimate decision maker for your health and we are here to help you get started and help you keep going!
