The turmeric-infused drink trend is relatively new in the U.S., but turmeric milk has historically been a popular drink in India, where it originated.

For centuries, turmeric milk – also called haldi doodh – has been a staple drink in India, often made to soothe sick children and help them sleep. In Ayuvedic medicine, it’s used for insomnia, coughs, and colds.

Today, the beautiful name and vibrant color of the instagramable drink may have lended to it’s mainstream popularity, but the health benefits are just as appealing!

Golden milk can help you sleep better while also boosting your immune function and improving digestion. It’s loaded with curcumin – a powerful antioxidant – and has been known to reduce inflammation and improve cognitive health. The drink may lower blood sugar levels and can also protect against heart disease and reduce risk of some cancers.

Given the simplicity in making it (you need nothing more than the ingredients, a pot, a whisk, and your mug), you may soon find Golden Milk a staple in your kitchen, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup any unsweetened milk of choice (dairy, almond milk, oat milk, full-fat coconut milk, etc.)
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp ginger powder or 1 small piece of fresh grated ginger
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tblsp honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 1 pinch of black pepper (black pepper is a must for boosting absorption)

Combine ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir well with a spoon or whisk. You can strain the drink through a cheesecloth or fine strainer if you like, before serving.

Variations:

Including an ingredient that contains quercetin (like black tea, green tea, moringa, chia seeds, or cocoa powder) will help with absorption of curcumin.

Fat also aids in curcumin absorption. If the milk you are using is lower in fat, consider adding coconut oil, MCT oil, butter, or ghee.

You can include a variety of flavors such as vanilla, cloves, nutmeg, and even cayenne.
