Q&A with Dr. Vartanian

What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?

I love solving puzzles. I feel that if we can change a few things, our lives will improve in all aspects. Sometimes we need others to point out that change. Personally, I love kids’ sports and all the enthusiasm that comes with it. I feel it teaches us a lot of fundamentals in life.

What three traits define you?

Passionate, Committed and Detail-Oriented

What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?

The sun doesn’t shine on itself, and a fruit tree doesn’t bear fruit for itself. I feel everyone has a calling to help and serve others in whatever capacity. That is when we are truly harmonious with nature.

What are you surprisingly good at?

Helping people feel at ease. I meet people where they are because they are at a vulnerable point in their life and they need someone to show them kindness, empathy, and help them re-discover their health.

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?

The people in my life – my family, community and network of friends.

How long have you been working in your field?

I have been practicing since 1996.

What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?

I have patients from the early days when I began practicing still reach out to me for help for themselves and their loved ones.

What’s your biggest accomplishment?

Helping raise three smart, healthy, kind children. It’s a never-ending challenge, but I can’t imagine life without it.

What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?

In high school I had the job of “Laser Master” which was essentially a referee at a laser tag arena.

What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?

We all have busy lifestyles, and it has become very difficult to incorporate healthy choices which are often not the most convenient or efficient. The modern life conveniences often rob our health and send us down the path of being unhealthy, or worse, having a disease. I can point out the most important things that need to change to help you return to health and regain the life you want to have.

Who is your ideal client and why should they connect with you?

My ideal client is a father or mother who has any health concerns of their own or for their kids. As parents, we are often living selfless lives and forget to care for ourselves so we can then care for others.

In your work or creative process, what concepts are sacred? Which rules have you made, which ones do you follow?

I find the consistent rule that always comes to fruition is “test, not guess.” So many times, patients hear of something on the internet that sounds like their condition, or a product that worked for someone they know, only to go down the road of not accomplishing anything and wasting their time. Every patient is an individual and there is no cookie cutter approach. I call it the biochemical fingerprint. It’s simultaneously the most challenging, and most rewarding aspect of Functional Medicine.

Where about (neighborhood, town, etc.) do you live?

I grew up on the north side of Chicago and presently live in Park Ridge.

Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?

This feels cliché, but I feel like I have a book in me. I just have to find the time to write it.

What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

I exercise on a regular basis. I like to travel so I can expand my worldview. I like to do small DIY projects around the house.

Share something unique that most people don’t know about you.

I was born in Lebanon and moved to the U.S. in 1970.
