About Melissa

Melissa first attended the University of Illinois at Chicago with a BA in Psychology followed by earning a Master’s Degree in Nursing at DePaul University. She later received her Family Nurse Certificate at DePaul University as well.

Melissa has been a practicing Registered Nurse since 2009 where she began her career caring for Burn patients and their families at Loyola University Burn Center. After she became certified as a Nurse Practitioner she has been practicing primarily in the Emergency Department.  

While the majority of her nursing career has taken place in the acute care setting of ICUs and the Emergency Department, Melissa has enjoyed branching out in healthcare, particularly in wellness and aesthetics.  

Melissa has served as clinical instructor and preceptor for RN students, NP students as well as PAs.  

Q&A with Melissa

What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally? 

I love having a career that helps people becomes their best self whether that is healing from an acute illness, having fabulous and radiant skin, or even just feeling at peace.  

What three traits define you? 

Loyal, caring, empathetic  

What are you surprisingly good at? 

Ax Throwing 

What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? 

The love and companionship of a dog. I should say my family but that also includes my dog.  

How long have you been working in your field? 

I have been in the healthcare field in one form or another since 2002! 

What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do? 

Patients that I took care of 10+ years ago still remember me and how I made them feel.  

What’s your biggest accomplishment? 

Surviving my first job as a NP in the ER. 

What problems do you consistently solve for your clients? 

Hydration. This is integral for my role as the IV infusion NP here at AMH but it has been an overlooked problem solver for many conditions presenting in the ER.  

 What are you complimented on most in your work? 

People often feel comfortable with me. Sometimes patient interactions can come from a place of vulnerability and I like to think I can put someone at ease both with my presence and competency.

In your work or creative process, what concepts are sacred? Which rules have you made, which ones do you follow? 

Always look at a patient as a whole—no one is one dimensional.  

Do you have any other passions of personal goals that you would like to share?

I would like to spend one year of my life traveling the world.  

What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?  

Yoga, cooking/baking, traveling
