Joanie Osborn’s passion for people and their ultimate success has always been at the core of her working relationships. She has been involved in the wellness community since 1988. After an extensive sales career in the world of residential real estate, Joanie changed course in order to pursue wellness professionally. Joanie trained in Nutrition Science with a Dietetics specialty from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey. She followed that up with her certification in Personal Training from the American Council on Exercise. In 2010, Joanie began to feel the need to combine her passions and to delve more deeply into the world of holistic wellness. After experiencing first hand the life changing effects of Chinese medicine, Joanie decided to further pursue the healing arts, earning her Masters of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine’s Chicago campus.
As a nutritionist and health coach, Joanie brings her unique insight into many of the issues that are of concern in today’s population. Marrying ancient wisdom with an understanding of modern stressors, Joanie has great appreciation for the collaboration between East and West. She treats a variety of conditions, specializing in pain management, stress, anxiety and emotional wellness. In an environment of acceptance, Joanie uses East Asian Medicine in combination with nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification as she centers her practice around her patients’ total wellbeing.
When she’s not in the clinic, Joanie prefers to be outside, whether hiking a mountain trail or enjoying a day at the beach. Being in touch with nature allows her to stay connected to her inner voice. She also loves lifting weights, practicing yoga, laughing with her family and friends, theater and enjoying a glass of wine. Wherever she finds herself, Joanie’s mission is to empower others so they may empower themselves.
Q&A WITH JOANIE
What are you most passionate about professionally? Personally?
People. I believe we all need to be seen and to belong. My goal is to use the skills I have to hold space for people so that their bodies can heal and the rest of their lives can follow that cue. Personally, I’m really interested in my own growth but it also comes back around to people. The better I am, the more I have to offer. I kind of want to save the world one needle at a time!
What three traits define you?
Persistent, Friendly, Observant…not necessarily in that order…
What would you do even if you didn’t get paid to do it?
Acupuncture and working out
What are you surprisingly good at?
Decorating…you should see my Pinterest!
What’s one thing you couldn’t live without?
Being outside. If I can’t get outside, I go a little stir crazy.
What’s the biggest proof that you’re good at what you do?
Referrals from people I think highly of. I love when that happens!!
How long have you been working in your field?
I’ve been working one on one with people forever. Even back in my sales days my focus was on finding the best path for my clients. I do the same thing now, just with acupuncture. I’ve been seeing patients for about 4 or 5 years now.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Tough question. Getting my Masters was big but there’s more to life than work. I have a pretty amazing daughter, but I don’t know if you’d call her an accomplishment.
What’s the weirdest job you’ve ever had?
When I was in undergrad, a friend asked if I wanted a side gig taking care of an older gentleman in a nursing home a couple of nights a week. My job was to get him down to the cafeteria for dinner and then back up to his room before bed. His name was Edgar Allen Poe and he was the great nephew of the writer of the same name.
What problems do you consistently solve for your clients?
Stress is such a big problem these days. Work is stressful. Even play is stressful. Relieving stress, whether physical or emotional, is a big part of what I do.
What are you complimented on most in your work?
Listening and getting to the root of a problem. We all need to be heard.
What is your grand, audacious goal? What do you wish people would know, believe, do?
I have a book in me somewhere. I wish people would take a step back from the insanity of
their lives and learn to relax and just be. Have you ever looked around and seen EVERYONE
on their phones? Nobody just stares out the window anymore.
What do you do for fun in your spare time?
I love entertaining, traveling, hiking, being by the water, working out and just being outside!
